Prolactin hormone is made by the pituitary gland. Pregnant women usually have elevated levels of prolactin as it helps in producing breast milk. They can also be elevated in liver cirrhosis, kidney disorder, and hypothyroidism. Prolactin levels are usually high immediately after waking up, hence getting a test at least 4 hours later is ideal to get an accurate reading.
