Autism: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that appears very early in childhood development, varies in severity, and is characterized by impaired social skills, communication problems, and repetitive behaviours.From as early as 1 to 2 years of age, people with ASD have an impaired ability to interact with other people. Autism in India has experienced tremendous growth in less than a decade. Growth has occurred in numerous domains: diagnosis, treatment and educational options, parental involvement, vocational options, human resource development, and legislation. There are around 79 schools and organisations all over India that specialise in teaching children with Autism. It is now recognised that the incidence of ASD is showing huge increase and reports are there from India and South-East Asia. As of date early intervention is documented to be the most promising approach. Genekart Research and Diagnostics Laboratory is conducting research on Autism funded byICMR titled”To evaluate the feasibility of multigene panel for diagnosis and management of Autism Spectrum Disorder in early neonatal period(<7days).” PGT: Preimplantation genetic testing: Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a method for screening thechromosomes for various abnormalities such as deletion, duplication and inversions.In vitro fertilization (IVF) uses techniques to select viable embryos for implantation after ovarian stimulation. A reported 25% and 75% of chromosomally abnormal oocytes are present in a woman in her early 30s and 40s respectively. Chromosomal abnormalities in an embryo can lead to pregnancy complication like early miscarriage, late abortion and also lead to birth defects from monosomy or trisomy. Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) is a method used to identify chromosomal defects in the embryo at an early stage.Array comparative hybridization (Array-CGH) was considered gold standard for the detection of aneuploidy but studies have shown equal utility and high sensitivity for next generation sequencing (NGS)_WES and or WGS also in detecting aneuploidies.Massively parallel sequencing has transformed almost all fields of medicine including the field of human infertility and its treatments. Genekart has an inhouse project using PGT-A for evaluating success rate using this technology.
